Mini-Documentaries/Training Project

11 Canoes is a project to teach older teens from Ramingining how to shoot, record and edit video so as to be able to make their own mini-documentaries and to record the cultural renewal that is taking place as a consequence of the 10 Canoes project.

Stage One, an eight week course run by Tania Nehme and Jessica Wallace in collaboration with Ramingining School was completed in October and November of 2004. It was funded jointly by Create Australia and Save The Children Australia. A number of video films have been completed by the students, others are works in progress. A recommendations paper has been written as to the best formal mechanisms that need to be instituted to follow up on the work done so far, and further progress will also be made when the Ten Canoes crew arrives in Ramingining in mid-April for a duration of at least two and a half months.

An immediate outcome of this program has been the inclusion of a new media course in semester 1 of 2005. The students now have the opportunity to receive further training in camera and editing skills using the school’s existing resources.
