Bobby Bununggurr: Yirralka

I made this painting round like a clan waterhole where the spirits are before we are born and after we die. This is a true story from Ramingining from a long time ago. A man and a woman got wrong way married, that man stole that woman from another tribe. So he had to get speared and there was a big war between the tribes. This is a painting about history and breaking the law and ceremony.

Exhibition

13 Canoes is a gallery exhibition project, co-curated by Belinda Scott from Ramingining's Bula'bula Aboriginal Arts Corporation and the South Australian Museum. It will be part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival and will be on at the South Australian Museum in Adelaide from February 24 to March 19, 2006.

13 Canoes will draw on all facets of the 'Many, many canoes' projects, with art forming the main interface. Each medium used in this multi-platformed project will use different means to present stories and ways of life of the people of the Arafura Swamp.

The bark canoes and artefacts used in the film, reproductions of historical Donald Thomson photographs, loaned historical works of art and contemporary artworks chosen for the website, the website itself, mini-docs from 11 Canoes and music from the 15 Canoes project will all feature in the exhibition.
